See Me Clearly: Women Photographers, Women Photographed

September 6, 2018 – December 31, 2018

This show highlights the history of photography as told through Julia Margaret Cameron’s photo of Alice Liddell, for whom ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was written; through Edward Weston’s photos of Charis Wilson, his model, muse and wife; through the photos of Group f/64, including Imogene Cunningham and Sonia Noskowiak; through pioneers of photojournalism like Margaret Bourke-White; the people who made history , like Amelia Earhart; and contemporary photographers who push the boundaries of popular aesthetics in different directions such as Ann Noggle and Lynn Geesaman.

This ambitious show features women: examining their prowess, influence and agency as both photographer and subject, artist and muse-and how with the passage of time and progress how our views on their work, and the works in which they appeared, have changed.

Comprised of over 60 images by 25 artists, the photographs included in the exhibit are primarily drawn from the Gallery’s collection. They are displayed together for the first time with historical information, stories, and personal notes, explaining the context and importance of the images and the people who made them.
